The Effects of Ultraviolet Light and Depth of Water on Escherichia Coli Bacteria

We tested the effects of ultraviolet light and the depth of water on Escherichia coli bacteria. We exposed the bacteria in water with a depth of 6 mm and 31 mm to the UV light for 20 minutes and for 45 minutes. We allowed the bacteria to grow overnight on LB agar plates in an incubator and counted the number of bacterial colonies the next day. We determined that the depth of the water and the exposure time to the UV light did affect the percentage of survival of the bacteria. The optimal conditions for the least amount of bacteria remaining were low water depth and high UV exposure time.
