Vitamins, Minerals, and Iron

The purpose of the investigation was to determine the amount of iron in selected vitamin tablets. Also, the purpose was to calculate the individual recommended daily allowances of sixteen students in the 12A class, and see how many, if any, students were following their individual recommended daily allowances.

The experimental lab for determining the amount of iron in selected vitamin tablets was performed using a set-up from a lab book for the Spectrometer 20D. This was done in order to compare the amount of iron found during the lab to the indicated amount of iron on the label. The portion of the research concerning the individual recommended daily allowances of the sixteen students of the 12A class was determined by a survey taken from Your Personal Vitamin Profile, by Dr. Michael Colgan. Each student filled out a form telling what they ate the previous day. From this, the average percent of vitamins and minerals received was determined for three students.

The conclusion for the experimental lab was that the first vitamin contained 41 milligrams of iron and the second vitamin contained 14 milligrams of iron. The labes indicated that both vitamins contained 18 milligrams of iron. Out of the three students selected for further data interpretation, none of them were following their individual recommended daily allowances.
