THE CONCENTRATION OF SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE IN DIFFERENT BRANDS OF BLEACHES

The purpose of this experiment was to see if Clorox, America's Choice, or Kroger bleach brands had different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite. It was hypothesized that of the three brands, Clorox would have a significantly higher concentration of sodium hypochlorite than the other two brands. To perform this test, a titration was used. An amount of bleach was taken and diluted, then mixed with hydrochloric acid and potassium iodide in order to make an indicator solution. Following this, the solution was titrated with a sodium thiosulfate solution in order to find the concentration of sodium hypochlorite in the three brands of bleach. After running ten trials of each bleach, the data taken was analyzed using an Analysis of Variance Test to see if there was a significant difference between the concentrations and box plots to see the difference more clearly. The statistical tests showed that there was not a significant difference in the concentration of sodium hypochlorite between Clorox, America's Choice, and Kroger brand bleaches. Because of this, it was concluded that there is no reason to buy one brand over the other based on the strength of the bleach.
