COMPARING THE AMOUNT OF DEXTROMETHORPHAN CONTAINED IN DIFFERENT COUGH MEDICATIONS

The purpose of the experiment was to compare the amounts of dextromethorphan present in CVS, Meijer and Robitussin brands of cough syrup. Sampling how much dextromethorphan was extracted from each 25-mL sample, using a filtering process, an ANOVA was performed to analyze the data. The results from this statistical treatment resulted in a P-value much greater than the significance value of 0.05; thus, we failed to reject our null hypothesis, that the cough medicines contained equal amounts of dextromethorphan. Therefore, the amount of dextromethorphan in each brand of cough syrup did not differ significantly. This shows that one who wishes to save money and purchase generic brands of cough medicine will receive the same amount of relief at a generally lower cost.
