Accelerated Reader is an excellent program that encourages kids to read for content.  The program provides tests for fiction and nonfiction books.  Once students have chosen and read an AR book, they can go on any school computer to take the content test.  The test is in multiple choice format and will present questions about events, characters, and settings for the stories the students have read.  If students pass the tests, they receive points which translate into cash for the AR point store.

These points are accumulated throughout the year.  When the AR point store is open in the media center, participating students get to reap the rewards of their hard work.  They will use their accumulated points at the store to "buy" literacy materials such as books, pencils, pens, stationery, and dictionaries.
