Grand Rapids Tournament
GAME 1: Despite a 2-2 tie going into the third, Warren Mott (3-7) came out winners in the first day of a Grand Rapids holiday hockey tourney. Ian Springfield scored twice including the game-winner and got an assist for the Marauders. Despite not being on the score sheet, coach Rob Pomaville said Stephen G., “played the best game he has ever played,” based on his hustle. Goaltender Kevin L. was solid in net with 37 saves. GAME 2: Opening the first period, Warren Mott went on the power play as Eric R. opened the scoring to put his team up 1-0. By the end of the first, Mott’s opponents, Unity Knights, tied up the game to end the first with one goal apiece. The second period is where it went all downhill for Mott as the Knights tallied up an astounding 5 goals to take a 6-1 lead at the end of 2 periods. As the Marauders attempted a comeback in the third period, with goals by Stephen G. and Eric R., second of the night and again on the power-play, it just wasn’t enough for Mott to bounce back after the horrendous 2nd period. The Knights added one more to their score sheet as the game ended with a final score of 7-3. Goaltenders Kevin L. and John C. combined for 58 saves on 65 shots with a .892 SV%.
GAME 3: Heading into the final night of the tournament, the Warren Mott Marauders felt confident they could claim the tournament trophy for the second straight year. Coach Rob Pomaville decided to go with Kevin L. to start in net, hoping to bounce back after a tough loss the night before. Again, senior Eric R. opened up the scoring for the game, scoring his 3rd goal in the tournament. That was the only goal scored through one as senior, Luke G., scored in the 2nd to give his team to a 2-0 lead. Heading into the third, the Marauders felt confident that they would win the game. Although the ice was tilted in their favor, the game was far from over. Mott's opponents, Northview Wildcats, cut the lead in half mid-way through the 3rd period stopping G Kevin L. from his first SO of the season. Later in the 3rd, Northview ended up tying the game to force overtime. Mott has been here before, as they were in the same position in the final round in last year's tournament, winning in OT by a goal from Brandon M.. Mott just couldn't get the puck behind the net as Northview ended the game in OT to take the tournament championship. This left the Marauders heartbroken. G Kevin L. played outstanding with a 52 save, .945 SV% outing.
